Ever After

The painting is themed around the story of Cinderella, but tells of how modern life has changed the messages of dependence and salvation. In this version she is dressed for the ball, without her glass slippers, and curled up as she waits. The jacket she is wearing is too big for her, a symbol of the transparent adult skin she will grow into. Her pumpkin is small and white, a decorative ghost of the traditional pumpkin. There are mice, but now they are mechanical and mindless. How will they transform into the magnificent stallions that would pull her pumpkin coach? Fairy tales almost always tell of helpless girls saved by handsome, powerful princes. In the modern story of Cinderella, there is no prince that can save our heroine from the threatening world around her. She will do that herself.
