Gorgon's Gift
32" x 32"/ 80 x 80cm
Oil on canvas
In mythology, Medusa was raped by Poseidon in the temple of Athena. The goddess then cursed Medusa by turning her into a monster that turned all men to stone. Medusa was slain by Perseus and out of her blood were born two children, one of whom was the winged horse. Cellini's statue of Perseus and Medusa from Florence represents the cruelty of the slaying of a wronged woman. The sky behind the horse holds the Pegasus constellation, and the horse is both real and unreal. The figs are a universal representation of fertility and womanhood, as well as bearing a similarity to a womb and the blood from which Pegasus sprang to life fully grown.
